Zeki Çağlar Namlı has been pursuing his work as an original artist who has been taking the bağlama far beyond its traditional boundaries for more than three decades. From a young age, he began developing his approach to tapping (şelpe) around the principle that “music is one,” moving the bağlama beyond its conventional single tonal center and expanding its use across all keys, bringing the instrument into dialogue with Turkish music, jazz, and, more broadly, the forms of world music.
As the architect of what has become known as the Zeki Çağlar Namlı School, he helped establish a new musical language and a distinctive technical vocabulary for the bağlama, contributing a singular chapter to its modern performance tradition and literature. His work has inspired a generation of players and helped reposition the bağlama not simply as a traditional Turkish instrument, but as a versatile universal instrument capable of engaging with contemporary global music.
Zeki Çağlar Namlı Saz Band represents the next expression of this thirty-year artistic vision. Built around Namlı’s original compositions, bağlama and a contemporary ensemble of guitar, double bass, drums and saxophone, the project continues to challenge the conventional boundaries of the instrument bringing his distinctive musical language into a new band format.
